Senator Daniel Inouye, who passed away recently, showed exemplary citizenship by his serving our country. He served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor, for his heroic actions near San Terenzo, Italy during WWII. After the war, he served in our government as a U.S. Senator and was the highest-ranking Asian American politician in U.S. history. His service to our country will never be forgotten.

I vividly remember Erlichmann and Haldeman referring to Senator Inouye as "a little Jap" during the Watergate hearings...I was astounded that they could use such racist comments, especially to a war hero who lost one of his limbs fighting for our country in WWII. However, at the same time, I also remember that Senator Inouye, accepted their apology with no hesitation and did not make an issue of it. He was principaled in his passion for his party, but he was never partisan. We will miss him, he was a classy person.
